The Man Behind the Method
William Delbert Gann
Born on 6 June 1878 in Lufkin, Texas, W.D. Gann walked seven miles barefoot every day to attend school — a journey that forged the discipline and determination that would later define his extraordinary career in the financial markets.
In 1902, at age twenty-four, Gann placed his first trade in cotton. He was already certain of one thing: the markets were not random. They moved like tides, like planets, like prophecy. He moved to New York in 1903 and threw himself into studying price data reaching back to 1820, cross-referencing movements with planetary cycles, Biblical numerology, and geometry.
His symbol — a circle containing a square containing a triangle — embodied his philosophy: price, range, and time were three expressions of the same underlying truth. When they converged, the market had to turn.
A Record of Predictions
Under independent observation, Gann executed 286 trades in 25 market days with 264 profitable — a 1,000% return. Richard Wyckoff described it "probably unparalleled in the history of the Street."
Forecast a world war and a major panic in stocks — before hostilities began.
